Hi, I’m Magella (pronounced as if with a ‘j’ - it’s Irish)!
My husband snapped this photo of me whilst we were on a hike in Christchurch. I was just at the end of my first trimester of pregnancy and was shockingly out of breath, despite it not being a particularly challenging hike! In addition to a lot of beautiful hikes (and a lot of refusing to admit defeat when I got tired) New Zealand was also where I cooked up the idea to do what had given me the most fulfilment in my recruitment career - coach, develop, and train others in the industry.
After over a decade in recruitment, a successful career and a great journey, I decided to leave my job to take a few months out to have a career break, travel, and figure out what was next. Thrive Pathways is it!
After starting in recruitment myself straight out of university I spent the first part of my career in a purely billings-focused role. It wasn’t until 2021 that I decided to move into management and begin building out a team. Having built my team from scratch and rapidly hiring 11 team members, only two of whom had recruitment experience and none of whom had any prior management responsibility, I understand better than most how challenging juggling your own desk and being a good manager can be. Whilst tricky at times, navigating this journey and seeing my team grow, progress and succeed was the most fulfilling part of my career by a country mile, and I think I’m so lucky to be able to now do what I love as a dedicated career.
In my first 3 years building a division, I supported every entry level hire to pass probation, oversaw 7 promotions, trained up two new managers and supported them hire for their own sub-teams, and maintained 100% retention for the majority of that time. From a one-woman-band to a £2million business unit in 3 years, my experience training and developing recruitment professionals at all levels of their career is as hands-on as it gets, and is what I loved the most about my job.
I am thrilled to be able to take this passion and genuine enjoyment into the recruitment industry, and I hope that, through Thrive Pathways, I can make a tangible difference to the careers of ambitious recruitment professionals.
