Hi, I’m Magella (pronounced with a ‘j’—it’s Irish)!
My husband took this photo during a hike in Twizel, New Zealand. We were travelling the world during a career break after I decided to move on from a decade-long career in recruitment—one I genuinely loved—to take a break and start building what would become Thrive Pathways. That moment marked the beginning of a new chapter, and this photo is meaningful to me as it was where this future endeavour really started to take shape.
The part of recruitment that always brought me the most fulfilment was coaching, training, and developing people at all levels. After starting in a 360 billing role straight out of university I moved into management in 2021 and built a team from scratch, hiring 11 people, almost none of whom had prior recruitment experience and none of whom had previously managed. Balancing my own desk while developing others was challenging at times, but the most rewarding achievement of my career and actually ended up propelling me to have my own personal best billing years.
In just three years, I helped every entry-level hire pass probation, supported 7 promotions, trained up 2 new managers, and maintained exceptional retention (100% for over 2 years). What began as a one-woman operation became a £2 million business unit in a very short time frame, consistently beating profit targets and nurturing a high performing division with a great culture. That hands-on experience—growing people, not just teams—is what I’m most proud of and passionate about.
Now, through Thrive Pathways, I’m excited to use that experience to support ambitious recruitment professionals and help shape careers with lasting impact.
I’ve also done a huge amount of work during my time in recruitment to train others, internally and externally, on inclusive recruitment practices and have an ‘Inclusive Recruiter’ certification with Candidate X. Being from a minority background myself and having experienced working in a world which isn’t (yet!) representative of the UK population, I’m extremely committed to ensuring that inclusive recruitment practices are woven into all of my training sessions.
